Tama Waipara from Sir+Plus and The Requirements on his new album...
"Recording this album was the most magical time. Turning up to Stebbings every day was like stepping back in time. The studio is so beautifully maintained that we had the luxury of a space that looks the way the album sounds. Rich and authentic. Justyn Pilbrow was a superb producer and the musicians who contributed to this recording have made it a really special and humbling process. This includes Tony Moan who engineered the album, who on day 4 or 5 revealed that he had also worked on The Beatles’ Abbey Road album!
I’m so happy with the way the album sounds and can’t wait for the show to kick off too. The two projects are linked by the central character of “Sir+Plus” but they each have their own life. I did all the backing vocals for the album but in the show we’re lucky enough to have 3 stunnning singers (The Soultana’s – Anahera Higgins, Cherie Mathieson, Esther Stephens) to add yet another dimension and aesthetic to the project. They even have their own featured song which is one of my favourite moments in the show."
Sir Plus and The Requirements perform Wed 18 - thurs 19 March in the Festival Club.
"Romanian playwright Eugene Ionesco's work may ask the big questions about life - why are we here, what's it all about and does it matter - but right now there's just one thought occupying actor Michael Lawrence. Why, oh why, did he and fellow actors Cristina Ionda and Denise Snoad think it was a good idea to perform Ionesco's Absurdist masterpiece The Chairs in English and in the original French at the Auckland Festival?"
